Ebony Bennett

Ebony is a 2024 National Contemporary Art Prize Finalist with her stunning piece ‘Holding Court’ – Red-tailed Black Cockatoos.

A nature artist and illustrator specializing in Australian wildlife, landscapes, and plants. Ebony works primarily with oil on canvas. Her painterly style captures the character of animals while maintaining a high level of intricate detail.

Raised on a rural property in the Hunter Valley, NSW, Her artistic journey began at nine, when she painted her first landscape with her grandmother after a camping trip in Birdwood, NSW.

Throughout high school and university, she continued to draw and paint, while earning a degree in Environmental Science.

While working in science-related roles in Canberra, Ebony pursued her passion for art, enrolling in Natural History Illustration at the University of Newcastle. Ebony earned a Class 1 Honours for her project ‘Beneficial Garden Critters’ and later completed a Masters in Philosophy, focusing on the effects of light and color across Australian environments in her project ‘From Sea to Snow: Illustrating the Effect of Light and Colour on the Natural World’.

Now based in the Hunter Valley and Canberra regions, Ebony is represented by several galleries and donates a portion of her profits to wildlife conservation organizations, including WIRES Wildlife Rescue, Birdlife Australia, and the Port Macquarie Koala Hospital, among others.
