Towards these strange doors by Caterina Leone
“I spent a winter in Finland on an artist residency. It is a place entirely unlike Australia. That difference prompted a shift in my understanding of how place influenced identity. I felt a sense of belonging, a unity of internal and external I had never experienced before. The silence; the cold; the seamless blend from sunrise to sunset with no harsh midday to punctuate them; and water, water everywhere in lakes holding mirrors to the sky. And temperatures so cold they were a constant reminder: you are fragile. Returning to Australia was jarring and this work is a true echo of place: an attempt to memorialise the icy Finnish landscape physically. The reality of the works reference is temporary: a photo projected, but the drawing –permanent, etched into gessoed paper in pure silver– embodies the memory of a place that forever changed me.” — Caterina
